1,764 law firms worldwide practising Anti-Money Laundering (AML) & Compliance. Narrow down by city to find a firm near you.
An AML and compliance lawyer helps businesses meet anti-money laundering and counter terrorist financing duties. Typical work includes writing know your customer procedures, running risk assessments, training staff, reviewing suspicious activity reports, preparing for regulator inspections and defending a company or its officers in an enforcement case. Banks, payment firms, crypto platforms, real estate agents, accountants and dealers in high value goods are among the usual clients.
The standards come from international bodies such as the FATF and, in Europe, from the EU anti-money laundering directives and the new AML authority. Yet the duties themselves are enforced nationally, by financial supervisors and financial intelligence units. Who counts as an obliged entity, how fast a report must be filed and what penalties apply all depend on the country.
Fees are usually hourly or based on a fixed project price for a policy review or audit. Many companies keep an AML adviser on retainer. Contingency fees are not used for compliance work and are generally not allowed in regulatory defence.
Deadlines can be very short. Suspicious transaction reports are often due promptly or within days, and regulators set firm dates for responses to information requests. Records must be kept for set periods, commonly five years. Before hiring, ask whether the lawyer has dealt with your sector and supervisor, whether the firm can also handle investigations and how it will keep your AML program current as rules change.
