2,067 law firms worldwide practising Employment Rights. Narrow down by city to find a firm near you.
An employment rights lawyer helps workers who think they have been treated unfairly at work. Typical matters include unpaid wages and overtime, holiday and sick pay, discrimination, harassment and bullying, maternity and parental leave, whistleblowing, working time breaches and changes to contracts made without consent. Many cases start with advice on a grievance or a letter to the employer and end in a settlement.
Employment rights are national and often come from several sources at once: statute, collective agreements, the individual contract and in some places regional or international rules. Some countries have special labor courts or tribunals and give strong protection to employees. Others offer less. Rules for workers on temporary, part-time or agency contracts can differ again, so a short consultation is usually worth it.
Fees vary. Many lawyers offer a fixed fee first meeting or settlement agreement review, and some employers pay toward that review. Hourly billing is common for disputes. In a number of countries employment rights claims can be taken on a contingency or no win, no fee basis, while others ban or limit success fees. Unions and legal expenses insurance often cover costs.
Deadlines are short. Claims to a tribunal or labor court may have to start within weeks or a few months of the event, and some countries require conciliation first. Keep emails, payslips and notes. Before hiring, ask whether the lawyer acts for employees, how strong your case looks, what a realistic outcome is and what costs you may face if you lose.
