230 law firms worldwide practising Sports Law. Narrow down by city to find a firm near you.
Sports law brings together contract, employment, image rights and disciplinary rules as they apply to athletes, clubs, agents, leagues and sponsors. Typical matters include player and coaching contracts, transfer disputes, sponsorship and endorsement deals, doping charges, match fixing investigations, injury claims and governance disputes inside federations.
Much of this field runs on private rules set by sports bodies rather than by states. FIFA, UEFA, national federations and leagues have their own regulations and tribunals. Many international disputes end at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne. Anti-doping cases follow the World Anti-Doping Code. National law still governs employment contracts, tax and image rights, so a sports lawyer often works with two systems at once.
Sports law fees vary with the client. Clubs and federations pay hourly or through retainers. Athletes may agree fixed fees for a hearing. Agent commissions are a separate matter regulated by sports bodies. Contingency fees appear in some contract or injury claims where national rules allow them. Deadlines in this field are brutally short. An appeal to the CAS generally must be filed within 21 days unless federation rules say otherwise, and doping hearings move quickly once a sample comes back positive.
Ask which sports and federations the firm knows well, whether it has argued before the CAS and whether it can handle tax and image rights alongside the main dispute. Filter by country or city below.
